The Professional Background of Chris Brooks

My Vision
Principal Educator
Chris Brooks
B.A. Dip.Ed.
I have a vision of the world where all people will be able to:
  • think efficiently,
  • learn easily,
  • and communicate effectively.

In such a world, the immense intellectual and moral capital of the human race will be able to be put to more productive use and so many of our current problems will be overcome.

Individual people will become more effective at personal, social, national and global levels, thus enabling them to develop a more sustainable lifestyle.

My Goals

To translate this vision into practice I have been working on the following goals:
  1. To build a coherent theory of the psychology of thinking and learning.
  2. To develop practical programs which teach people how to learn and think.
  3. To develop practical programs which teach generic skills such as reading, logic and mathematics.
  4. To get teachers, at all levels, worldwide, to teach students how to learn and so go beyond the current over-emphasis on content.

My Achievements

Over the three decades that I have been an educator I have largely achieved my first three goals. This includes having developed and tested sophisticated and comprehensive programs which teach skills in the areas of:
  • thinking
  • learning
  • language
    • reading
    • writing/spelling
    • listening and speech
    • comprehension
    • analysis and logic
  • mathematics

The current focus of my work is to package these learning programs in such a way that the maximum number of people in the world can benefit from them. The internet seems to be the ideal vehicle for this so I am currently adapting these programs so they will be easily accessible on-line.

Once these programs are easily available, I am confident that teachers will learn from the philosophy behind them and gradually adjust their practices to embrace teaching their students how to learn better.

I am also in the process of writing a book which outlines my educational and psychological theories.

My Motivation

I work in this area because I had an amazing experience when I was in grade 3 - a light bulb came on in my mind - I realised that my teachers were teaching me what to learn - the content, but were not teaching me how to learn it - the method. It seemed obvious to me, even at that age, that if you teach people how to learn, then they will be able to learn the content faster, and better. I remember that experience as if it were yesterday.

When I was young I did not have good learning and language skills. I struggled through my formal education at school and university. I became a teacher so that I could save other people from going through the same experience. Consequently, since becoming a teacher, I have been passionately involved in helping people get the most out of their formal education by teaching them better ways of learning.

My Motto

Education should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone.

My Education

After initially working and studying to be a Chartered Accountant when I left school, I changed my course midstream and started an Arts degree with the unusual combination of majors- Psychology and Mathematics. I studied a mixture of other science and humanities subjects including Physics, Accounting, Economics, Philosophy and Sociology. I then trained as a Remedial Teacher and as a Mathematics Teacher. While at university I ran a private study centre for aboriginal children at the La Perouse community in Sydney. After graduating I worked in primary, secondary and special schools in NSW and SA. In my first year as a teacher I was awarded a special grant by the Australian Government to develop new methods of teaching mathematics in junior high school.

In 1980 I branched out on my own as a Specialist Educator and have worked privately ever since. Occasionally I still lecture in schools, colleges and universities, but most of the time I run a wide range of private, tailor made courses for individuals and groups, both in Australia, and overseas. I cater for people of all ages and at all educational levels. I also work with the corporate sector offering training courses for managers, and their staff. I have the facilities to teach people from around the world using the internet.

My Educational Materials

I have developed, and produced a large number of innovative educational programs and materials, especially in the areas of thinking, learning, reading and mathematics. In the audio field, I have produced many radio documentaries, some of which have received national awards. I am currently working on adapting my programs so they are accessible on the internet.

My Company

I set up the company High Performance Learning to provide the venue for a team of committed people to bring the vision of better education for all into reality.
