| You may have experienced becoming tired after studying for a while, even though you are "just sitting around reading". This is because learning something new involves changing the way you perceive the world. This is a somewhat stressful process because it involves a re-organisation of your mind to accommodate the new knowledge.
Also, you will have found that some days it is much harder to learn than others. This is probably because you are feeling more mentally or emotionally stressed than usual, so your mind finds it more difficult to accommodate the new knowledge.
Unfortunately, stress in unavoidable, so as a student you need have strategies for dealing with stress when it comes along so that you can continue to concentrate properly when you are trying to learn. We teach simple, self-help techniques which lower tension levels and calm the mind. These techniques can also help you deal with both acute and chronic stress symptoms such as headaches, digestion problems and sleep problems.
Minimising the impact of the stress in this way is alright as far as it goes, but it is no substitute for isolating the source of stress, and doing something about that too. This is easier said than done when you are already in a stressed-out state, so it is often useful to talk over your situation with someone else, to get another perspective. You may well be surprised by the insights that you can get in this way.
As a student, one of the most obvious causes of stress is keeping up with your studies. If you are finding the work difficult then a course in Advanced Learning and Study Skills may be what you need. As a first step, however, we suggest that you get us to teach you some stress management strategies.
